A key theme in sustainable design today is that the materials that go into a building each come with their own environmental impact. This conversation cannot happen without first analyzing these products for their individual potential environmental impact. An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), based on a complete Life Cycle Analysis, provides this key information. As more manufacturers produce products with EPDs it becomes easier to design in partnership with products and manufacturers with a focus, awareness, and transparency of environmental impact. This course addresses the topic of EPDs; understanding, interpreting, and utilizing the valuable information and disclosures they contain to meet sustainable design goals.
Understand the purpose and credibility of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) as an industry tool.
Differentiate between an EPD and other forms of product transparency and other environmental claims.
Gain the knowledge of how EPDs can be used as a tool for environmental design and building certifications and how EPDs can be accessed.
