October 2026

October is National Window Covering Safety Month, an important reminder to take a closer look at the blinds and shades throughout your home.

Accessible window covering cords can pose a hazard to infants and young children, particularly when cords are near cribs, beds, furniture, or play areas. The Window Covering Safety Council recommends using cordless window coverings or products with inaccessible cords in homes with young children and replacing older corded blinds and shades with today’s safer options.

Modern cordless blinds and shades make it easier to prioritize child safety without giving up privacy, light control, or design. When shopping for new window treatments, parents and caregivers can also look for the Best for Kids™ certification label, which identifies products that have met specific safety criteria and undergone third-party testing.

Child Safety, Elevated.

One of Mermet's partners, Draper® At Home, is putting that idea into practice with its Elevate cordless manual shade system, winner of the People’s Choice Award for Best Child Safety Solution at IWCE 2026.

Elevate features new Draper® exclusive patented BalanceFit™ Technology for smooth, cordless manual operation. A light touch raises or lowers the shade without traditional hanging operating cords or chains, and Draper® describes the cord-free design as a safer choice for homes with children.

It is a great example of how safety, functionality, and thoughtful design can work together from the start.

Window Safety Resources

Window Covering Safety Month is not just about raising awareness. It is also a good opportunity to check the window treatments already in your home and learn what to look for when it is time to replace them.
