The Story of Mermet USA

As the leading innovator of sun control textiles, our care for people propels us to design only the highest quality fabrics to comfortably control environments and create better places to live, work, and visit.

Unparalleled Innovation

With French roots dating back to 1951, our founders had an eye for functional, yet tasteful European design. From humble beginnings along the Rhone River Valley in France, the Mermet brand grew to become internationally synonymous with elegant, functional design in commercial window coverings.

A technological revolution

In 1976, technology in the fabric industry was advancing rapidly. And with it, so did Mermet’s product line. It was during this time that weaving of long-lasting and energy-efficient fiberglass sunscreen fabrics began. Mermet’s factories in France took advantage of this modern process and boosted the company’s profile and product-to-market success.

Overseas Expansion

Mermet USA began in 1986 when Mermet opened facilities in Australia and the United States. The new U.S. production base in Cowpens, S.C. gave Mermet the manufacturing and logistical support needed to bring European and Continental architectural taste and design accents to architects and interior designers in the U.S. market. In 2000, Mermet USA began fiberglass weaving to increase product-to-market schedules.

Customer-driven focus

Technology and innovation have always been at the heart of what drives Mermet to meet customer needs. KOOLBLACK and GreenScreen are two unique Mermet offerings that have revolutionized how window shade fabrics perform and look in a space. With KOOLBLACK, Mermet brought to window shades technology initially used by companies like BMW and Harley Davidson to reduce a seat’s heat absorption. GreenScreen is Mermet’s answer to sustainable, high-performance fabrics developed from recycled plastic in collaboration with some of the world's leading experts.

A Growth Catalyst

In 2005, Hunter Douglas acquired Mermet USA to form the largest international sunscreen business. With installations ranging from the Petronas Towers in Malaysia to the John Hancock Tower in Boston, Massachusetts, Mermet’s fabrics have been used in many applications for thousands of projects around the world. Today, Mermet’s extensive product line of high performance and vinyl-coated fiberglass solar protection fabrics cover various commercial applications to meet the growing market demand for sustainable and comfortable spaces.

Unwavering determination

While many things have changed over our history, one thing has never wavered. Driven by the underlying care for our people and customers, we weave the highest quality fabrics to comfortably control environments and create better places to live, work, and visit.

That’s the Mermet way.
